On 'The Speech'

Medea Benjamin and I -- surprise! -- were not too impressed with Barack Obama's speech yesterday on the Middle East. Check out our reaction over at Common Dreams.

I bet you a dollar that after the next republican gets elect madea will be running like a scalded dog back to the democrats. The woman has no real beliefs.

  2. I'm not sure how you can spend a decade protesting war 24/7 and not have any real beliefs, especially when your activism gets you labeled a kook by all Respectable Americans.

So she supported Obama in 2008 -- well, she's criticizing him now. Are we never to let people overcome their mistakes? Should we just gloat that hey, we were right all along and you weren't, na-na-na-na?

I never supported Obama. I thought it was naive to think he was any sort of peacenik, and I've never bought in to lesser evilism. But I understand others who share the same principles as me disagree on tactics; some have more faith in electoral politics than they should. Instead of deriding them and reveling in our own radical purity, we ought to try convincing them why they're wrong -- and derision isn't the most persuasive approach.

  3. Perhaps you're unaware, but in my (Google) feed reader this post is accompanied by an official 2012 campaign advertisement for Barack Obama, complete with his grinning face and the exciting question, "Are you in?"
