Here is an Op/Ed that I wrote for the 4/20/06 issue of The Vista. It is available here and also over at Strike-the-Root.

"Why Do So Many Americans Hate America?"

Hi, was your article at Lew Rockwell a joke or are you actually serious? If so, did LewRockwell.com post your article in an effort to share diverse views?

    Mr. Davis,

Your April 17, 2006 article, Why Do So Many Americans Hate America?, is a truly remarkable piece of insight. Your use of the satirical form not only highlights the absurdities of the Bush Administration's policies, but also epitomizes the the disbelief that many Americans feel when confronted with the "You clearly hate America" charge.

Good luck in your future endeavors. Our nations needs minds like yours.

    Keep up the good work!

  5. I have just concluded reading your interesting exercise in journalism. You state: "...operating over 6,000 bases in the Untied [sic] States and 702 overseas bases in about 130 countries." I would be interested in your source for this factoid. Does this include the Marine Corps security details at foreign embassies as well as the recruiting details which are occasionally ejected from various campuses?

In your following statement: "...30 people may have burned to death in a Baghdad market as the result of an ongoing wave of sectarian violence,..." you seem to imply that this outrage was perpetrated by or at the behest of agents of the U.S. Allah forfend!

I hope you can assist in the clarification of these issues.

Charles Davis responded: According to the Defense Department's 2003 Base Structre Report (http://www.defenselink.mil/news/Jun2003/basestructure2003.pdf) they operate 702 overseas bases. If you click on the link, you can see a breakdown between Marines, Navy, Army, and the Air Force.

I also don't "seem to imply" anything as to how 30 people may have burned to death. However, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have happened if *gasp* the United Stated had not invaded and destabilized the country to the point that rival sectarian gangs roam the streets of the capital, but I digress.

  7. Thank you for the link to the Base Structure Report, an examination of which reveals the totals include facilities of minimum (less than 2 acres) size and few or no staff. The vast majority, while owned and/or operated by DOD would be hard put to be characterized as "bases". I visited one such "base" near La Paz in Baja California of 100+- acres. No buildings or staff other than a Mexican "caretaker" who ordered me to "salga inmediatmente!". The citing of such statistics will serve you well in your chosen "calling".

The chief difference in Iraq these days being that the "rival sectarian gangs" do not appear to be agents of a dictator who amused himself by filling mass graves and making war on his neighbors or (gasp) gassing villages (Yet?)

"Why do so many Americans hate America? I really HATE how people twist logical opinion into hate mongering! Obviously Americans don't hate America since we are still living here. His mission is a joke, to bring democracy to Iraq and whatever other country he decides; this is not commendable or altruistic, it is a money making, oil grabbing venture, US citizens aren't as stupid as you may think. We can read between the lines. Our past history clearly shows that we instigate and initiate even our own beloved American military into deadly situations as well as our civilians, blaming these acts on some other country so we can justify a war which is ruining their way of life which has been THEIRS for hundreds if not thousands of years! It is possible to not agree with or decline to appreciate the crappy job the current administration is performing and not liken that to hating our homeland. This IS The Best Country that I know of; SO FAR! Just because of the current PTB we are quickly heading down the toilet, into a third world country classification. While heads of major contracting corporations working in Iraq and other countries are striking it rich, we just sit back and watch our precious sons and daughters give their lives for a cause that isn't their cause. I pray that people, and politicians will wake up and save what little dignity these United States has remaining. Thanks for letting me speak my opinion.
