I have a new article up at LewRockwell.com discussing the major media's general failure to report on allegations that the Bush administration is backing Pakistani extremist groups to launch terrorist attacks inside of Iran. The article juxtaposes the amount of non-coverage this story has received to the amount of press that Don Imus' bigoted comment received, and asks why credible claims of American-supported terrorism are deemed less newsworthy. The article also includes the response from Senate Intelligence Chairman Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) when I asked him to comment on the allegations.

When the members of Congress are all rich, comfortable and privileged they have a great deal to lose by getting in the way of the people who really control the government.
ReplyDeleteTo actually engage in political leadership they would have to risk losing all of this. They have very little to actually gain personally, and very much to lose personally.
These people won't actually risk losing all of this. They will avoid political leadership.
The lesson, then, is that when the members of Congress are wealthy, comfortable and privileged, they are unwilling to actually engage in anything resembling political leadership. Look at the way Cheney is attacking Senator Reid, for example.
Members of Congress should be people who have nothing to lose personally. Then they would be willing to engage in political leadership.
If you read the Constitution you see that virtually all of the power of the government that is given to anyone at all is given to the members of Congress. If they did not stand to lose so much personally they would be able to do what the Constitution authorizes them to do.
